This session brings together artist talk and collaborative workshop in an exploration of sacred cartography, divination, and visionary practice. Edgar begins with an introduction to their multidisciplinary art practice, spanning video, installation, performance, and oracle systems, before opening into a global survey of divination as a technology of knowing: its forms, histories, and living traditions across cultures and continents. At the center of this inquiry is the Nierika, the Wixarika technology of a visionary portal and sacred map, a site where the visible and invisible worlds meet. Students are then invited to create their own cartographies using the map not as a document of what is, but as a tool of communion, imagination, and world-making, a space to chart the worlds they dream of, desire, and are working toward.
Edgar Fabián Frías (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, and cultural practitioner from Los Angeles whose work spans video, installation, performance, and divination systems. Drawing on indigenous futurism, Wixarika cosmologies, spiritual traditions, and new media, their practice explores the intersections of memory, vision, healing, and collective imagination.
