Irritated matter
Following the topic of ‘Materiality and synaesthetics’, I will mobilise different theories of materiality in relation to historical and contemporary practices located at the edge of art, craft, counterculture and digitality. Through the examples of the work of the spirit medium Georgiana Houghton (1814-1884), the nuclear scientist and electronic musician Erkki Kurenniemi (1941-2017) and the proto-cyberfeminist textile punk Charlotte Johannesson (*1942), I will discuss materiality as an irritant of representation and identity as it plays out between experimentation and theory.
Lars Bang Larsen is a writer and curator. He has (co-)curated exhibitions such as Reflections from Damaged Life (Raven Row, 2013), Incerteza Viva (the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo, 2016) and documenta. Politik und Kunst (Deutsches Historisches Museum, 2020-21). He works as head of research at Art Hub Copenhagen (AHC)
