unreality / HØLIDAY
Francesca Centonze, 2020

Sapore di sale,
sapore di mare,
un gusto un po' amaro
di cose perdute,
di cose lasciate lontano da noi
dove il mondo è diverso,
diverso da qui.

Taste of salt,

taste of the sea,

a slightly bitter taste

of things lost,

of things once left behind

in a different world,

different from here.

- Gino Paoli

In 1963 Gino Paoli wrote the summer hit „Sapore di sale“ in which he sang about a typical day at the beach. He described it as: „...a holiday, a temporary departure from consolidated habits”. The work „Høliday” starts with a stock image of the sea which is combined with a picture of a handheld smartphone displaying a familiar texture used by a well known brand.

The image of the sea arouses a calculated feeling of tranquility that plays on our desires, on our understanding of the sea as a place of relaxation and contemplation. The hand, the phone and the texture refer to our turbocapitalist world in which we chase compulsive enjoyment. A world in which long term satisfaction is sacrificed on the altar of short term gratification. On our devices the sea can be watched in the form of a copy, and is therefore impossible to fully experience. We remain with “things once left behind in a different world, different from here”.
